Godfrey Sanga

Deputy Project Director and Tanzania Country Lead, HETA

Bio

Godfrey Sanga is a clean energy engineer with 20 years of experience in projects design and implementation in Africa, focusing on products market development, capacity strengthening, financing, and advocacy. He has a combination of technical, economic, environmental, and social skills and experience in energy access and productive uses for different target markets including households, enterprises, and social institutions. He has led regional organizations, directed, and managed teams and projects, and served as advisor for donor-funded, publicly funded, and privately funded projects. Godfrey has worked with international organizations including USAID and Power Africa, Energy 4 Impact, Mercy Corps, and Development Bank of Southern Africa.

In his current role, Godfrey leads in development of strategies and execution of planning and implementation of HETA’s work deploying renewable energy and digital connectivity solutions that improve health facilities’ service offerings while reducing costs and environmental impacts. He supports HETA country teams in assessing needs; in designing, planning, and implementing interventions; and conducting performance monitoring and evaluation in line with USAID guidelines and Abt policies. In addition, he works with other team members to develop strategic partnerships and collaborations, mobilize funds and other resources for HETA, including buy-ins (co-funding and operational support) from USAID missions and energy service companies, digital connectivity providers, host-country governments, and health facilities.

Before joining HETA, Godfrey was regional director for Energy-4-Impact at Mercy Corps, managing company operations, business development, and project delivery in East Africa. He also led planning, performance management, stakeholder coordination, budgeting, procurement, implementation, monitoring, compliance, quality assurance, and reporting for projects that provided energy access to millions of individuals, enterprises, and institutions; created jobs and incomes; and contributed to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Godfrey also worked with the Development Bank of Southern Africa in establishing a multimillion-dollar challenge fund, the Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) program, and coordinated its implementation in Southern and East Africa, countries during its early stages.
